Behçet is a systemic vasculitis. Systemic means that it can occur in all parts of the body. Vasculitis means that it concerns inflamed blood vessels.
Because of the systemic aspect, Behçet is a matter for internists. They are the ones who deal with ‘the total system’ called human. Within internal medicine, a number of subspecialties can be identified, including clinical immunology, which is particularly concerned with autoimmune diseases such as Behçet and other primary vasculitides (plural of vasculitis).
For this reason, the care for Behçet patients at Erasmus MC has been placed with the medical group that also takes care of the other vasculitides: The Clinical Immunology group. This unit is the responsibility of Professor Dr. P.M. van Hagen and the expertise center is managed by Dr. J.A.M. (Jan) van Laar. Under his leadership, this part of the department has grown into the only formally recognized center of expertise for Behçet’s disease in the Netherlands.
As a center of expertise for Behçet, Erasmus MC is also part of the European Reference Network RITA for rare immunological and inflammatory diseases.
Behçet is een systemische vasculitis. Systemisch wil zeggen dat het zich kan voordoen in alle delen van het lichaam. Vasculitis wil zeggen dat het gaat om ontstoken bloedvaten.
Vanwege dat systemische aspect is Behçet een zaak van internisten. Zij zijn degene die zich bezig houden met ‘het totale systeem’ dat mens heet. Binnen de interne geneeskunde zijn een aantal subspecialisaties te onderkennen waaronder klinische immunologie dat zich in het bijzonder bezig houdt met auto-immuunziekten zoals Behçet en andere primaire vasculitiden (meervoud van vasculitis).
Om die reden is de zorg voor Behçet patiënten in het Erasmus MC ondergebracht bij de medische groep die ook de overige vasculitiden onder haar hoede heeft: De groep Klinische Immunologie. Deze eenheid valt onder de verantwoordelijkheid van professor dr. P.M. van Hagen en het expertisecentrum wordt aangestuurd door dr. J.A.M. (Jan) van Laar. Onder zijn leiding is dit deel van de afdeling uitgegroeid tot het in Nederland enige formeel erkende expertisecentrum voor de ziekte van Behçet.
Het Erasmus MC maakt als expertisecentrum voor Behçet tevens deel uit van het Europees Referentie Netwerk RITA voor zeldzame immunologische en inflammatoire ziektes.
